In geographic information system (GIS) technology, topology is the model used to describe how features share geometry; it is also the mechanism for establishing and maintaining topological relationships between features. ArcGIS implements topology through a set of validation rules that define how features may share a geographic space and a set of editing tools that work with features that share geometry in an integrated fashion.
The Topology toolset contains a set of tools that can be used to manage a topology. The following table lists the tools available in the Topology toolset and provides a brief description of each.
NOTE: Tool availability is determined by the ArcGIS license. Licensing requirements for each tool are listed below.
Tool | Description |
Add Feature Class To Topology | Adds a new feature class to a topology. Requires an ArcEditor or ArcInfo license. |
Add Rule To Topology | Adds a new rule to a topology. Requires an ArcEditor or ArcInfo license. |
Create Topology | Creates a new, empty topology. Requires an ArcEditor or ArcInfo license. |
Remove Feature Class From Topology | Removes a feature class from a topology. Requires an ArcEditor or ArcInfo license. |
Remove Rule From Topology | Removes a rule from a topology. Requires an ArcEditor or ArcInfo license. |
Set Cluster Tolerance | Alters the cluster tolerance for the input topology. Requires an ArcEditor or ArcInfo license. |
Validate Topology | Evaluates features against topology rules within a specified area. Requires an ArcEditor or ArcInfo license. |
